VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Community Tree Hub Planting Event – Saturday, October 15th

Ahead of our proposed 2023 launch of the FCF community tree hub, we are pleased to start this project a bit earlier in partnership with CAFES and through a generous donation of tree seedlings from Ecology Ottawa. We are planting small seedlings into our seedling area (a.k.a. the FCF community tree hub) which will serve as a swing space for rescued saplings and newly started FCF seedlings. This will boost our internal skills and give FCF greater flexibility when sourcing tree stock for future planting events.

On Saturday, October 15th, we intend to plant around 1,200 seedlings of various species.  To make short work of this large task, we will choreograph the work during the day.  Shovels and other equipment will be supplied, however, we ask that you bring your own gloves and water bottles.

We will split the day into two shifts. The first is from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, the second is from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm. You are also welcome to sign up for both shifts. The event will run rain or shine so please dress accordingly (warm layers, closed toed shoes).  There will be some light refreshments and the event is family friendly. Please consider joining us to help plant these tree seedlings. It is shaping up to be a wonderful day!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Aviation Parkway Planting with the Boys and Girls Club

We are hosting a planting event for the Boys and Girls Club on October 17th. The event is taking place from 4:00 to 5:30 pm along the Aviation Parkway, near the bike path entrance at the intersection of Rainsford Ave and Clarke Ave.

We are looking for a few volunteers to assist with the event set up, which will begin at 3:00 pm. Volunteers will also act as planting support during the event. Your main responsibility will be to support the tree planters, by bringing compost or any other things they may need. Depending on how many trees we are able to plant there may be some at the end of the event that we will need your help planting.

If you are interested in volunteering at this event please email us at comms@foretcapitaleforest.ca

More Volunteer Opportunities to Come!

Keep an eye on your inbox as we will be hosting a Base of Operations Winterizing Party in the weeks to come! Some activities include but are not limited to: adding tree guards to trees, adding additional mulch to trees, and adding protective netting on seedlings.

These are all important winterizing activities that will ensure that our trees are in the best shape to endure our long Ottawa winters. This will also serve as a last chance to visit the site and say ‘hi’ to the trees you may have helped to plant before winter sets in.
