We hope this newsletter finds you well and we are excited to share the progress we’ve made in July! As always, we are deeply grateful for the support and dedication of all our hardworking volunteers.

Thank You Volunteers! July Activities So Far

Throughout the month of July, we’ve had weekly volunteer events focused on weeding and potting up forbs. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our incredible volunteers, we’ve made significant progress. On July 4th and 13th, volunteers came to our Base of Operations at the Just Food Community Farm to help us weed our Tiny Forest Demonstration Plots and pot up forbs and wildflowers for our Fall projects. On July 18th, we had a successful volunteer event at our Aviation Parkway site where a group of enthusiastic volunteers joined us in removing weeds. This helps to reduce competition from invasive species to allow the native species we planted to thrive.

New Abundance in our Tiny Forest!

Our volunteers’ hard work has paid off! The Tiny Forest Demonstration Plots are thriving. New fencing has been installed to prevent animals from grazing. Significant progress has been made mulching and weeding the forest which has helped the native species to grow. It’s an exciting time of the year – many of the native wildflowers are blooming and many of the native shrubs are fruiting!

Upcoming Volunteer Events: Join Us!

We have posted more events and activities for volunteers in our events calendar. The upcoming activities vary from planting fruiting shrubs along our foraging pathway and applying mulch to trees and shrubs located in our Red Barn Food Forest and more! Please see our FCF Public Calendar for all the latest FCF volunteer opportunities!

If you’re interested in attending an event of the calendar, please email us at comms@foretcapitaleforest.ca to let us know!

When attending, please make sure to:

  • Wear long pants and closed-toed shoes with tucked-in socks as there are tall weeds on-site.
  • Bring water (recommended 2 L minimum), as there is no drinking water source on site.
  • Wear a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for sun protection.

We hope to see you there!
