Our Tiny Forest Beginnings
Our first four tiny forests were planted as demonstration plots at our Base of Operations at the Just Food Community Farm in 2022. We envisioned our demonstration plots would be a space where we could learn more about the method, collaborate with researchers to gather more data than what is currently available, and share our findings with others.

Where Do We Plant Tiny Forests?
Each year, we plant more and more tiny forests across the National Capital Region in collaboration with partners, landowners, and communities. We have planted on schoolgrounds, public parks, communal housing greenspaces, and university campuses. Check out the location of our Tiny Forests below:
What Do We Plant in Our Tiny Forests?
Tiny Forests contain canopy trees, understory trees and shrubs, and forest floor perennials or grasses. Occasionally, we incorporate an “edible fringe” – food-producing species that are native and naturalized to our region, strategically planted on the perimeter of the tiny forest to make for easier harvesting and better light availability. We plant our tiny forests with the help of project partners, funders, community volunteers and FCF staff.
