Since 2020, Forêt Capitale Forest has transformed Ottawa’s urban landscape—planting over 20,000 trees, shrubs and forbs, building vibrant food forests, and working with communities across the city to take climate action right in their own neighbourhoods. What began as a grassroots idea has grown into a community movement for biodiversity, food security, and connection. From schoolyards to parks, FCF’s projects are turning spaces green, creating thriving habitats for wildlife, and inspiring a generation to care for the land.

Advance climate change mitigation efforts
Trees play a crucial role in sequestering carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. One tree can sequester 10 kg of carbon each year! As we plant and care for trees, we help offset carbon emissions from various industrial sources. We also maintain these urban forests, sustaining carbon sinks that will sequester carbon and contribute to climate mitigation into the future.
Invest in higher tree survival rates
Forêt Capitale Forest’s operations are based on forestry best management practices. We see our projects through all aspects of afforestation, from site preparation to providing tree care for at least 2 years after the trees are planted. Ongoing tree care provides the trees with the best chance of surviving through more than just one season.

Forêt Capitale Forest is guided by an afforestation model dedicated to planting the right native species in a location. By planting a range of different native species, we ensure new urban forests are resilient and enhance local forest biodiversity.
